Discussing Whoever Believes in Him….

Believing is about more than facts. In this lab, John Piper explains that if Judas and the demons can believe in God, then something beyond mere orthodoxy is required to have saving faith.

  1. How can the Bible say the demons believe while also saying they are not saved? What does genuine faith look like?
  2. Read John 3:16 and James 2:19. How would you summarize the difference between the faith mentioned in each verse?
  3. Watch the lab. What does John Piper say saving faith must include to not be faith like the demons have? Do you have this faith?

Principle for Bible Reading

Action-Purpose

Authors often give us reasons for why someone did a certain action or why we should do a certain action. They typically give the action statement first (e.g. I went to the store/you should go to the store), then a conjunction or connecting word (in this case, usually, so thatin order that, or simply that), and finally the reason for the action or the purpose statement.

For Example

Parents tell their children to eat their broccoli (action) so that they can have dessert later (purpose). The commercial tells us to buy this shirt (action) so that we can be more attractive (purpose). First Peter 5:6, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God” (action) “so that at the proper time he may exalt you” (purpose).
